Princess Polychrome in the crowd of the final scene of Return to Oz
I suspect Polychrome was Baum’s version of an empowered Persephone. The Nome King begs her to live with him in his underground kingdom, but she chooses to return to her mother, the Rainbow, in the sky.
In “Tik-Tok,” anyway; she’d already appeared in “Road” without any clear connection to Persephone. I think you’re on to something there, though, as the Nome King is very much a Hades analog.
